September 12th, 2007: San Francisco

My friend Jess from school was in town, stopping over on the way to Alaska (!), so I spent a lot more time in the city than I usually do. Turns out, SF is pretty fun! I should go there more.

But before that, one thing I never really appreciated: the sad bears at the foot of the Campanile, which is after all a World War One memorial. Now, on to happier things.

not a bad city

not a bad park, either

that weird fountain by the ferry building

(I didn't end up having any pictures that actually included Jess. Go me. So you'll have to take it on faith that she was actually here.)

September 12th, 2007: Sierra Conference 2007

Every year, our department has a camping trip. It's called the Sierra Conference just to confuse people: it's not necessarily in the Sierras and it's certainly not a conference. In the past, it's been a pretty big deal; more recently, it's been a little less well-attended. But it's still camping and hiking and that's good enough for me.
